A week ago Sunday I took my first ever hot air balloon flight. It’s been on my ‘bucket list’ as part of my quest to put a little more adventure into my life.

The late afternoon weather was perfect, the sky beautiful, the wind steady and light. I helped hold open the envelope, that’s the pretty part that inflates, as the crew used a fan to blow air into it as it lay on the ground, and then as our pilot, Tom Robins, turned on the twin burners to heat the air.

Today is Yom Kippur. The Day of Atonement is the holiest day of the year for Jews. I am not of the Jewish faith, and I do not pretend to fully comprehend all that this day means for people of the faith. But I do understand what it means to repent and atone for my sins.

Do you have a bucket list? Today I cross three of them off my list. It is fitting that my first blog post should be about another new experience. As a belated birthday present to myself, later today I will take my first hot
air balloon ride. We’re leaving from a central New Jersey location about an hour from my home. We’ll go where the wind takes us. I hope we soar high and sail over interesting terrain. I hope I remember to take a few photos. Continue reading
