The Worst Choices are Those You Never Make

A few weeks ago I heard Michael Hyatt speak about his new book, Living Forward: A Proven Plan to Stop Drifting and Get the Life You Want. Written with Daniel

Harkavy, the premise is simple:

“When it comes to life, most people are spectators. They watch events unfold a day at a time. They may plan their careers, the building of a new home, or even a vacation, but it never occurs to them to plan their life.”

Having a life plan is all about consciously making choices, and consciously making changes so that you can realize your life plan, or make adjustments to it. Too often, you don’t take time to think about what it is you really want to achieve. You forget to listen to what you’ve said is important to you. Or, you pretend you haven’t heard the call to live your life with purpose, with a plan.

Not Choosing is also a Choice

So what happens?

Sometimes what happens is one of these:

  • The immediate gets in the way of the important
  • The expedient is favored over the excellent
  • The easy comes at the cost of the ethical
  • The risk is feared more than the reward is wanted
  • A resolution feels better than an uncertainty

Or perhaps,

Or the worst one of all: ‘It’ll get better on its own, I don’t need to take any action.

The problem with all of that is that 10 years later you look back on your life and you realize you’ve been stuck this whole time. Now you’re 10 years older and you’re in the same situation, it’s no better than it was and you’ve wasted a lot of your opportunity to live life on your terms, to realize those things you want for yourself and in your relationships with others.

You have forgotten to listen to your inner self. You have neglected to listen to your dreams.

The Choice I’m Making

It’s easy for me to get lulled into life, living one day after the next. Sure, I get things done, sometimes I get a lot of things done, sometimes, it seems like I’ll never get everything done that I want to do. But there’s a difference between planning what you’ll do and planning who you’ll be.

I don’t know about you, but Doing is easier for me than Being. Sometimes with all of the doing, I forget to listen to my dreams, to plan for reaching them and then working my plan, a little bit every day, to reach them.

It was my birthday a few weeks ago and I find that my birthday is a great time for me to look back on the year, and the last several years, and evaluate what I’ve done, and what I haven’t done. I asked myself this: “What’s been going on in my life while I’ve been busy making other plans?”  I haven’t done this in the past few years with the degree of intensity that I’d like to have given it.

So now, I’ve started to make a list of those things, the good, the bad, the done and the undone. I can feel a time of growth coming, and it’s exciting to me. I have no idea what the future holds, but I know its going to be interesting, and I’m going to learn and I’m going to grow.
