“Have I reached the person to whom I am speaking?”
~Lily Tomlin, as Ernestine
When was the last time you had a good long laugh that made your sides ache and yet you couldn’t stop?
Laughing is one of life’s greatest pleasures and is a marvelous gift to give to yourself. You probably already know about the health benefits that come from laughing, such as the deep breathing and muscle relaxation you experience when you laugh. You probably know that laughing helps you forget about your troubles, even if only for a few short minutes and can help you bring perspective to a difficult situation.
Just when you need it most, laughter can be the hardest to come by because you’re too wrapped up in the seriousness of the situation. That’s when you need to be open to looking at whatever is happening to you and find the humor in it. Thinking about the situation in the extreme can be a good way to start.
I’m a fan of Brit-coms and British comedic movies simply because the absurd storylines make me laugh. They take simple ideas and good intentions and carry them to the extreme in unpredictable ways.
When I need a good laugh, I drop a DVD of a favorite British movie or old TV series into the player and hop on my elliptical trainer for a couple of relaxing miles. It brightens my day and helps me remember that whatever it is, it too shall pass.
Like a kidney stone.
Life Is Honest, Open and True: Laughing can open your mind to see your situation objectively and open your heart to accept what is happening.
